Bachelor of Science in Nutrition, Dietetics and Wellness


Nutrition is a diverse and dynamic major that teaches you about the relationship between nutrition, healthy eating, health maintenance, disease prevention and chronic disease development. Through this degree, you’ll learn how to work with individuals, families and the community to enhance lives. NIU has been preparing professionals in nutrition and dietetics since the turn of the century. When you graduate from our program, you’ll join a vast network of alumni across the region and the nation.

This degree prepares you to be part of a health care team to use nutrition to treat and prevent disease. It’s also provides a great background for positions in public health and community programs, as well as sales, development, or communications work in the food industry.

There are two areas of emphasis within this major:

  • Didactic Program in Dietetics (DPD) – coursework that prepares you for the dietetic internship necessary to become a Registered Dietitian
  • Nutrition, Health and Wellness – coursework that provides you the background necessary for roles in community agencies, educational institutions, corporate wellness programs, personal training/consulting and health and fitness clubs
