Public Health

NIU’s public health program within the School of Health Studies offers several opportunities for students to prepare for a career in public health. Undergraduates can major or minor in public health. Graduate students can pursue a graduate certificate or a master’s degree. All students will benefit from instruction by outstanding faculty and staff, preparing them for rewarding jobs in their field.

Bachelor of Science in Public Health

Public Health (B.S.) is an exciting, diverse major concerned with the health needs of populations. Focusing on health promotion and disease prevention and addressing complex health problems at the community level, students may choose to concentrate their studies in one of four focus areas: General Public Health, Health Administration, Environment & Health, and Health Promotion.

Public Health majors will complete a practicum to gain real-work experience through an internship in their field of interest.

Students with an associate’s degree in Allied Health can apply for our B.S. degree completion program.

Master of Public Health

The Master of Public Health (M.P.H.) program prepares professionals for leadership positions in public health and health-related agencies. Students may specialize in health promotion or health services management. We offer fully online and face to face versions of the M.P.H. Starting in Fall of 2015, all required face to face classes will be offered during the evening to accommodate students who work. Graduate students will participate in an internship / practicum in a professional setting. Through extensive classroom and hands-on experience, students acquire the health care planning and information handling skills needed for a diverse and constantly changing field.
