Observation, Participation & Research
Policies and Procedures

The Child Development Laboratory (CDL) serves as a site for observations of children’s development, ages 8 weeks to 6 years and is pleased to cooperate with requests made for observation, participation, and research. Prior to utilizing the CDL, we encourage all faculty and students to read our mission and philosophy statements on our website to assist you in understanding the CDL framework. The policies below have been developed to ensure the privacy and safety of children at the CDL. All faculty and students observing or completing projects at the CDL must adhere to the following regulations:

  • All University students must be enrolled in a course sponsored by a faculty member.
  • Groups of observers must have a sponsor who is responsible for the group while observing.
  • Faculty and students may not take photographic images or record children without written consent from the child’s legal guardian and child informed consent.
  • All photographic images or recordings may not be published unless authorized by legal guardian written consent.
  • Children’s last names are not to be used outside the program either in written reports or with photographs.
  • Children who are tired, restless or otherwise unwilling to participate in the activity should not be forced to do so. If need be, the activity should be rescheduled.
  • Follow confidentiality rules and regulations; all faculty requesting student observation at the CDL should cover confidentiality regulations with students and verify on the observation application that students are aware of these regulations.
